broke ground
on a new 330,000 SF facility at Riverside Research Park
Ground was broken in November for the much-anticipated, state-of-the-art NCI facility that will house the Advanced Technology Partnerships Initiative (ATPI) and is the beginning of a new era to expand drug and technology development. As part of the larger 177-acre Riverside Research Park, NCI’s 62-acre site will have expansion capacity for another 470,000 SF, reserved for life-science and advanced technology partner organizations.
Along with Matan Companies, state and local officials, including host Dr. John Niederhuber, broke ground on the facility November 12th in Frederick, MD. As stated by Dr. Niederhuber, “I have participated in the symbolic turning of a shovel of dirt to begin some important projects during my academic career, but none more meaningful to me than one this past week (Nov. 12th).”
NCI has already established a collaborative agreement with GE Global Research under this program. “For NCI and the larger cancer community, this research park represents an opportunity to co-locate private sector research and development programs, biotechnology partners, and academic collaborators on a research campus dedicated to reducing the cancer burden,” said Dr. John Niederhuber, Director of NCI.
Riverside Research Park is being developed by the Matan Companies, one of Maryland’s premier real estate development firms, and SAIC-Frederick is the operations and technical support contractor for NCI’s facility in Frederick, MD. Located within the city limits of Frederick and less than three miles from the main gates of Ft. Detrick, Riverside is uniquely positioned to provide private sector companies, government agencies, and universities a collaborative, campus-type environment, with the added benefit of co-locating with the National Cancer Institute.
